This photo has been languishing on my hard drive for a couple of months now, as have most of the ones to follow. I took this in the parking lot of a grocery store (Kroger to those here in the east, out west I think the same store is called 'Fred Meier') in mid to late December last year (2004, and more than likely around Christmas time if not later. I've let my memory slip, but I'll always remember these vistas! Now you will, too!)
Just looked at the details after submission. It seems that the time and date were somehow stamped on the file I transmitted ... Seems like this photo was shot on Christmas Day at 1:09 A. M. ... Don't let that time fool you! Lexington is not only in the northern hemisphere, it's not so far north that our trees would look like that in the sprigntime when there might actually be daylight at one in the morning.
Chalk it up to me being lazy while setting the camera's clock.
Hey David! That's hilarious. I've actually seen the Trek episodes where those occur. I was thinking of them when our town got blasted by an ice storm. It probably means no intentional harm.....
I like this tree. I guess, to put it better, I like the subject you chose and how you chose to shoot it. It's neat to focus in on something that we take for granted:in this case, treetops. But, you've brought attention to something complicated and pretty. Good job.
Thanks, Jag! Glad to know someone else out there thinks along lines similar to mine! (I'm just wondering, though, if you did any 'fright takes' when you laid eyes on your town's Crystalline Entities? ...)

Actually, the fright takes were not the sight, but the sound....of slight cracking sounds getting louder until a large limb crashes, either next door or a few feet away. My first ice storm was a chilling experience -- especially considering we lost power for the day as well.
How true, indeed, Jaguaro! This particular storm wasn't quite as bad as the one we had on February 15th, 2003! We were without electricity for a week for that one. Lexington made it to the national news. My "little town" looked like some sort of arctic warzone. (I put "little town" in quotation marks because, well, I have trouble calling any city with a population of 269,000 small. Not quite a megalopolis, but still clearly a metropolis.)
It took me a while to find these pictures, but it was worth it. Most of the items I found in reference to the date had pictures from newer neighborhoods. To give you a better idea of exactly how bad it was, I had to find shots from the older parts of town (where we have trees lining the streets that probably predate the market crash in October 1929). These pictures illustrate it perfectly! I've seen nothing like this before, but things similar to it happen at least once every ten years.
There was an ice storm similar to the one from two years ago in 1993, but it didn't knock out power to three quarters of the city for days on end. Those two storms were downright scary. The one from Christmas '04 was just downright pretty. As far as I can recall, there was minor damage around town. The previous storm did a fine job of trimming any trees that wouldn't stand up to the mere quarter of an inch of ice we got this time around.

I just realized the anchor tag that contained the pictures I wanted to share didn't work. I know now that you can't put in an < a href= > tag! So, just copy and paste [link] to your browser.

Yup. That's what it looked like at our place. We thought we were unlucky to lose power for the whole day, until we learned that some lost it for as long as you folks did!
Ever seen Ang Lee's "Ice Storm" movie? Very creepy.
